Do you get frustrated when you`ve mastered your way onto the green in regulation and then proceed to 3 putt the hole, me too. By highlighting some simple
tips for putting in golf, I am going to try and help you overcome this awful predicament . We lose sight of the fact that putting accounts for 50% of our shots in a round yet we are prepared to take a lesson to practice our swing, our grip and even our stance. How many of us actually undertake putting lessons ? You should ideally be looking to take 30 or less putts per round so here are my best
tips for putting in golf to help improve your skills and putting accuracy.
1) Head Position - Your head should be directly above the ball and parallel to the putting surface. Imagine for a second that you are just about to `nod off` with your head right down. This will help your alignment and assist in your stroke. This will also help avoid rotation in the upper body and work to towards to creating a square clubface on impact.
2) Long Distance Putts - When you are faced with a long putt, the ultimate aim is to avoid 3 putting at all costs. I will look to get the ball as I like to call it `within the dustbin lid`. A great way of gauging distance is to pace your putt out first. Now ideally, you should be doing this first on the practice green to get used to the idea. When you make a great putt, remember how it felt, the tempo and distance back and forth you took the club in the stroke. This piece of advice will undoubtedly aid in developing putting accuracy.
3) Golf Putting Grip - If we take up our normal golf grip on the putter, we find that there will be a certain amount of rotation in the clubface. This is not good for putting as we only have a short moment of squareness in the clubface and we are looking for control and feel. We want to create a neutral position with our hands on the club so neither dominates. This helps the clubface stay square back and through the stroke and will enable better putting.
4) Putting Stance - The ideal stance will be one that allows no movement in the lower body as you are wanting to have your upper body rock the putter back and forth in a pendulum motion. Your feet should be shoulder width apart, bent over from the waist and a small amount of flex in the knee. Also try and tuck your elbows into your sides, As we have already mentioned above, your head should be directly above the ball. The ball should be slightly ahead in your stance and therefore under your eye (right handers).Keep your body parallel to the target line to allow the ball to travel on it`s intended path.
Putting in golf can be mastered by getting the basics right. We all need putting help at some point in order to become the best putter possible. If you concentrate on just one golf putting tip at a time then over time you will see how easy it is to bring your score down by 4, 5, or even 6 shots in a round. How good will that feel as you watch your handicap tumble and you become the envy of your playing partners. Remember, these are just some simple
tips for putting in golf but if you get these right, the 3 putt will become a thing of the past.
